Terraria town NPCs provide shops, services, progression-related items and utility. A useful NPC reference needs to explain not only who an NPC is, but how that character becomes available and why the unlock matters.
Common unlock types
- Having suitable housing available.
- Reaching a boss or world-progression milestone.
- Finding or rescuing the NPC in the world.
- Meeting an item, stat or event-related condition.
Why NPC progression matters
Some shops and services become more useful as the world advances. That means an NPC can be relevant even after the initial move-in condition has been completed.
Housing and location
Housing is part of the system, not just decoration. When planning a town, leave enough valid housing for future NPCs and think about whether you want important services close to frequently used travel routes.
